Southern Highlands Cultural Heritage Project

This project page for for all the Southern Highlanders and those who are interested in Southern Highlands for cultural heritage preservation. The purpose of the project is to record the dying melanesian ways of Nipa, Poroma and Kutubu people of Southern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea.


The project has just started and will involve the youths of Nipa, Poroma and Kutubu to record their own cultures and melanesian ways of through literature and digital recording.


For a start, the project will look into preserving the melanesian ways such as the 'bilas' of Nipa people, Poroma people and Kutubu people. Also a record of their oral history will take place with the focus of their own language at the edge of vanishing with much outside influence.
